Debate squad finishes season with top ranking

Wake Forest University’s varsity debate squad finished the 1995-96 season ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to the latest rankings of college debaters.

It marked the second consecutive year that Wake Forest completed the season in the top spot.

The National Debate Committee awarded the first-place ranking to the university when the season concluded this spring. Wake Forest’s ranking was determined by the performance of its two top teams in their top eight tournaments.

The other top 10 teams, in order of rank, are Dartmouth, Northwestern, Michigan, Southern California, Liberty, Iowa, Wayne State, Emory and Baylor.

Wake Forest had three two-person teams this spring in the National Debate Tournament, hosted by the university. One of its teams advanced to the final eight in the tournament, which drew 72 teams from nine regions of the country.
