Media Advisory: Finals Week at Wake Forest

Wake Forest University is hosting the following activities and events to help students survive end-of-semester exams.

Late Night Breakfast, Dec. 9, 10 p.m. to midnight

Faculty and staff will serve students a free late-night breakfast in “The Pit” in Reynolda Hall to kick off end-of-semester exam week. The midnight breakfast is a revival of the tradition started in the 1990s by the late Professor of Sociology Charles Longino, who every year recruited administrators, other faculty members and staff to serve a late-night breakfast to students during fall and spring semester exams. After Longino’s death in 2008, the late-night breakfast ended until this year when Campus Life and Leadership renewed this opportunity for professors and members of the community to offer students some extra TLC during exam time.

“Wake the Library,” Dec. 2 through Dec. 15

Nearly 25,000 students will spend hours studying at the Z. Smith Reynolds Library during exam week. To ease the anxiety, the library makes a welcome spot. A top-secret “Wake the Library” committee has decorated the atrium for the event. Midnight snacks and unlimited coffee start on Sunday, Dec. 9. Students find out what is being served each night through Facebook and Twitter. The campus community has donated mugs for the BYOM (Bring your own mug) campaign to reduce coffee cup waste from the more than 2,000 cups that will be consumed during exam time. A graffiti wall will be in the library atrium for stress relief. During this week, the library is also hosting its “Cans for Fines” program — accepting canned goods as payments for overdue fines. Each can a student donates waives $1 from overdue charges. The library launched “Wake the Library” in 2006.

“Love is Louder than…,” in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library

Whether elaborately decorated or plain, the postcards collected by Wake Forest’s Gender Equality Allies (GEA) offer words of encouragement during exam time. The semester long “Love is Louder” postcard project began in September. All semester, students, faculty and staff have been mailing anonymous postcards that complete the thought “Love is Louder than….” The campaign is an offshoot of the national Love is Louder campaign that offers supportive messages during difficult times. Amy Shackleford, a junior from Orlando, Fla., who spearheaded the project for GEA, felt hanging the postcards in the library during exam week would be a good reminder for stressed-out students that there is life beyond studying for finals. The project is sponsored by the Z. Smith Reynolds Library and the University Counseling Center.
