Media Advisory: 2014 N.C. Family Business of the Year award winners announced

Wake Forest University Family Business Center and Business North Carolina have named Schiffman’s Jeweler’s, K&W Cafeterias, Rose Chauffeured Transportation and Carolina Management Team the 2014 N.C. Family Business of the Year award winners.

Recipients will be recognized at the sixth annual awards celebration to be held on May 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Mint Museum Randolph, 2730 Randolph Road, Charlotte.

Winning businesses are named in four categories: Century, Large, Medium and Small.

Century Category: Schiffman’s Jeweler’s, Greensboro, N.C.

Established in 1893, Schiffman’s Jewelers is one of the oldest continually owned, family-run businesses in North Carolina and is now guided by the 4th generation of the Schiffman family.

Large Category: K&W Cafeterias, Winston-Salem, N.C.

K&W Cafeterias was founded in 1937 by Grady T. Allred Sr. Celebrating 77 years, Dax Allred and Todd Smith (husband of Natalie Allred), lead the operations of their 33 cafeterias. Seven grandchildren and two of their spouses are also involved in the daily operations.

Medium Category: Rose Chauffeured Transportation, Charlotte, N.C.

H.A. Thompson and his son Andy have built the Rose name into the largest corporate ground transportation company in the Carolinas. They started the business in 1985 with just one car. The fleet numbers 53 today.

Small Category: Carolina Management Team, Enka, N.C.

In 2003, the brother and sister team of Wendy Banks and David Van Zee formed a new industrial painting company with the help of their father, George Van Zee. The three created a business plan that would become an industry leader in infrastructure rehabilitation.

To be nominated for the Family Business Awards, a business must have its headquarters in North Carolina. Businesses are evaluated based on innovative business strategies and practices, business growth and development, contributions to the community and industry, involvement by family members and generations, and commitment to family wellbeing. The nomination process is open from July through November each year.

Applications may be completed online or printed and mailed to WFU FBC, ATTN: Rhonda Stokes, 200 North College Street, Suite 150, Charlotte, N.C. 28202.  The deadline for nominations is Nov. 7 and the deadline for applications is Dec 5.
