Media Advisory: American Muslim leader to speak at Wake Forest

Naeem Baig, president of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), will present a lecture titled “Building a More Inclusive Society” at Wake Forest University on March 24 at 7 p.m. in Wait Chapel.

The event is free and open to the public.

ICNA is a leading grassroots organization in the American Muslim community that works to establish connections between Islam and the public and focuses on self-development, education, outreach and social services. Under Baig’s leadership, ICNA started a national campaign to counter negative perceptions of Islam and sponsored more than 100 informational billboards about Islam in major cities across the country, including New York, Seattle, and Tampa.

Known for his interfaith work, Baig currently serves as the Moderator for Religions for Peace USA and co-chairs the National Muslim-Christian Initiative. He serves as the Muslim Coordinator of the Catholic-Muslim Mid-Atlantic Dialogue. He was a member of the Taskforce on Global Initiative on Faith, Health and Development. He additionally worked as a consultant on the “Study on Christian-Muslim Relations,” sponsored by the Department of Interfaith Relations of the Presbyterian Church (USA). He is serving as the Chairman of the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms (NCPCF) and the American Muslim Taskforce on Civil Rights (AMT) and is a member of the board of Interfaith Workers Justice (IWJ).

The lecture is sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain, the Department of Religion, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Thrive, and the Muslim Student Association.
