Faculty and guest dance concert to be held at WFU

Dance concertThe Wake Forest University Dance Company will present the Fall Faculty Guest Artist Dance Concert Nov. 21 – 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre of the Scales Fine Arts Center at Wake Forest.

The concert will feature works by local choreographers Fanchon Cordell, Sean Sullivan, Brantly Shapiro, Nina Lucas, Karla Coghill and Carol Johnson.

Cordell and Sullivan teach at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Lucas is associate professor of dance and director of the dance program at Wake Forest, where Shapiro is on the faculty. Coghill is the artistic director and choreographer for Sidelong Dance Company as well as an instructor for the Academy of Dance Arts, where Johnson is the faculty coordinator.

Ballet, jazz and contemporary dance pieces will be performed.

Dancers will perform a new classical ballet piece choreographed by Shapiro titled “Bijoux” to music by Georges Bizet and George Friedrich Handel. Cordell will present a re-staging of Marius Petipa’s famous classical ballet “Paquita Pas de Trois” to the music of Leon Minkus. “In the Ether,” choreographed by Coghill, is a quartet to the music of Marjory Kennedy-Fraser meant to evoke atmospheric conditions. Sullivan’s contemporary work, “…from…” will be performed to music by Colin Wolcott, Don Cherry and Nana Vasconcelos. Music by Benny Goodman and from the Broadway musicals “Sweet Charity,” “Chicago” and “Fever” will form the backdrop for Lucas’ untitled jazz piece. Johnson’s “The Girls Got Style” will feature music by Matthaeus Waldenmaier and Ray Obiedo.
