Meet Shoshanna Goldin

Shoshanna Goldin

During high school in Allentown, Penn., Shoshanna Goldin created a charitable organization, Pretzels for People, that sold chocolate covered pretzels and donated all proceeds to international and local nonprofits. She speaks four languages: English, Hindi, Spanish and Hebrew. She has presented research to the Centers for Disease Control and designed and implemented a museum exhibit about Moravian female education in early America.

What has been your biggest challenge in life so far? Three winters ago, I had a craniotomy to remove a brain tumor. Relearning to walk and tackle steps took time, but throughout the experience I gained a sense of empathy. I quickly discovered that no matter how challenging my situation was, many of the other patients on my floor had much harder fights to face. I’ve come out of the situation with a new focus on improving the lives and health of children. I’m now planning to pursue a global health degree and become a pediatric epidemiologist.

What are you most looking forward to about the journey you’re beginning? I’m planning to  continue my research and advocacy against adolescent use of energy drinks and conduct research at the medical school. Also, Wake Forest is bursting with community service options, and I’m eager to get involved with as many as possible. I’m planning to join Hillel and participate in the sustainability programs on campus. I’m excited to start meeting the amazing class of 2015 and get involved!

What novel has inspired you? “Half the Sky,” by Nicholas D. Kristof. I’ve always been passionate about social justice issues, but this book gave me a focus. It’s bursting with inspiring and shocking stories of real communities in developing countries.

Why are you and Wake Forest a good match? From funding for research in Thailand to study abroad programs in Venice, Wake Forest is filled with international opportunities. I’m looking forward to taking advantage of them.

What do in enjoy in your spare time? Inventing new recipes, curling up with a novel on a comfy chair and spending quality time with friends.
