Welcome Center wins LEED gold

Wake Forest’s Welcome Center & Admissions building, completed in March, has been awarded the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. This is the third new building to have a goal of LEED silver and then achieve a higher level.

Shopping center sale benefits students

Students at Wake Forest University, Queens University of Charlotte and Wingate University will benefit from today’s sale of Park Road Shopping Center in Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Porter Byrum donated the shopping center to the institutions in June. Wake Forest will receive in excess of $40 million from the sale.

Obesity hits boomer generation

New research shows baby boomers are not getting enough exercise. Professor Jack Rejeski says it takes physical activity, not just dieting, to shed pounds, and that exercise is especially important as people start to age because dieting alone could cost them precious muscle in addition to fat. As the U.S. women prepare for the World Cup finals, a Wake Forest research group has reported that top female soccer players aren’t beyond faking injury to deceive referees and gain an advantage. But they don’t do it as much as their male counterparts.

Safer blood transfusions

Depending on the amount and age of the stored blood used, transfusion can lead to complications including infection, organ failure and death. New research by Professor of Physics Daniel Kim-Shapiro found these complications are likely due to red blood cell breakdown during storage, suggesting blood may need to be stored differently.

Faculty member dies in bike-race crash

Erik Lie-Nielsen, a 35-year-old doctor and faculty member at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, was killed Friday morning when he crashed during a bicycle race that was part of the Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain.
