Cheyenne Woods, a rising senior and the niece of Tiger Woods, shot a 2-under 69 to finish first in stroke-play qualifying at the Women’s U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Woods, who won the ACC championship last month, was the only player to break par.

Golfer Natalie Sheary has been named the ACC Women’s Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year. Sheary, a religion major who graduated in May, finished tied for eighth at the NCAA Championship and posted a 4.00 GPA this spring.

Mother of Brian Piccolo dies

Irene Piccolo, the mother of Wake Forest legend Brian Piccolo, has died. Brian Piccolo’s battle with cancer was immortalized in the 1971 movie “Brian’s Song.” That same year, Wake Forest students established the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive, which has raised more than $1 million for cancer research.

Senior football player Dennis Godfrey, a native of Sanford, N.C., has helped mobilize the campus to collect food and clothing to donate to the state’s tornado victims. Items can be donated at 5 p.m. today in front of Wait Chapel. Godfrey and friends will deliver the items Friday.
