Flutist, Harpist to open Wake Forest’s Secrest Artist Series
Flutist Eugenia Zukerman and harpist Yolanda Kondonassis will open the 2000-2001 Secrest Artists Series at Wake Forest University on Sept. 21.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall.
Zukerman, who is a novelist and arts correspondent for “CBS Sunday Morning” in addition to being an acclaimed concert flutist, will perform with world-renowned harpist Kondonassis. Cited by The New York Times for her “powerful playing and musicianly energy,” Kondonassis has been featured on CNN and PBS as well as NPR’s “All Things Considered.”
The program will include “Sonata in F Major” by Benedetto Marcello. Marcello wrote stage works, vocal and instrumental music in the 16th century. The duo will also perform “The Garden of Adonis” by contemporary composer Alan Hovhaness. Kondonassis recently recorded Hovhaness’s composition, “Spirit of the Trees.”
“Serenade No. 10” by the 20th century American composer Vincent Persichetti will complete the first half of the program. The second half will include short pieces by Michio Miyagi, Carlos Salzedo, Jean-Michel Damase and Jacques Ibert.
For more than 25 years, Zukerman has performed with orchestras, in solo and duo recitals and in chamber music recitals around the world. In addition to her performances with Kondonassis, she has shared the stage with Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and the Shanghai Quartet.
Among her many recordings is a solo flute recording called “Incantation” and “Aria,” a collection of opera favorites. In 1998, Zukerman became music director of the International Vail Valley Music Festival. Zukerman has published two novels, “Deceptive Cadence” and “Taking the Heat,” and co-authored a non-fiction book, “Coping with Prednisone,” with her sister Dr. Julie R. Ingelfinger.
Since making her debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 18, Kondonassis has appeared as a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the New World Symphony and the North Carolina Symphony, among many others. She has won top prizes in the Maria Korchinska International Harp Competition in Great Britain and has received two Solo Recitalists Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Kondanassis heads the harp departments at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Oberlin Conservatory.
Her 1993 debut album features music by Ravel, Debussy, Salzedo and Grandjany. Other discs include “A New Baroque,” “Pictures of the Floating World,” “Dream Season,” and “Sky Music,” which was selected by the New York Daily News as one of the “Ten Best Classical CDs of 1996.” Kondonassis’ latest recording features the first transcription of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.”
