Religion Chair at Wake Forest publishes views on school prayer

Charles A. Kimball, chairman of the religion department and a professor at Wake Forest University, has written an op-ed piece about public prayer at high school athletic events that appeared in the Commentary section of the Los Angeles Times on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Kimball argues that the growing movement in support of collective recitation of the Lord’s Prayer before high school football games trivializes the very Christian principles that supporters defend. He cites Jesus’ teachings about the Lord’s Prayer to argue that authentic prayers and religious freedom for every citizen are in danger of being undermined by this popular movement.

The piece is available for publication through the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. Kimball is also available for interviews at (336)758-5465. His email address is kimball@wfu.edu.

Kimball is an expert analyst on the Middle East, Islam, the Religious Right and other issues raised by the intersection of religion and politics. He is also the author of three books about religion.
