WFU Theatre presents “The School for Scandal” beginning April 6

The Wake Forest University Theatre will present “The School for Scandal” by Richard Sheridan April 6-7 and 11-15. Sharon Andrews, assistant professor of theater at Wake Forest, will direct the student cast in this 200-year-old farce about a group of scandalmongers who turn gossip into an art form.

Sir Peter Teazle, played by Nick Kinder, keeps a watchful eye over his much younger and mischievous wife, Lady Teazle, played by Nathalie Cordone. At the same time, he investigates his rakish nephew, Charles, played by Lee Briggs, to see if he is a worthy heir to his fortune. The wealthy and gullible Sir Oliver Surface, played by Lee Norris, returns from the Indies to assist Teazle in his inquiry of the young man.

Sir Oliver’s son, Joseph, played by Jonathan Horvath, has his sights set on Lady Teazle.

The show is performed with spirited verbal dexterity and is full of sanctimonious moralizing, injured reputations and seductive overtures, Andrews said.

“School for Scandal” will be performed at 8 p.m. on April 6-7 and 11-14. An April 15 matinee will begin at 2 p.m. The play will be performed in the MainStage Theatre in Scales Fine Arts Center.

Tickets are available at the box office weekdays from noon to 5 p.m., and at the ticket window one hour before performances. Credit card orders may be made by phone at 758-5295. Ticket will cost $12 for adults and $5 for students.
