Baptist students awarded scholarships to attend WFU
Twenty-two students were awarded the William Louis Poteat Scholarship to attend Wake Forest University in the fall 2001.
Each scholarship is worth $11,200 annually and is renewable every four years. Named for Wake Forest’s president from 1905 to 1927, the Poteat scholarship recognizes students who are active members of churches affiliated with the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina or the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.
Recipients also show promise of making vital contributions to the church and the community during college and after graduation.
The winners are:
- Whitney Meredith Loyd of Raleigh. Loyd, the daughter of Gregory and Lydia Loyd, will graduate from Sanderson High School. She is a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Loyd is the scholarship’s Nathan D. Dail recipient. The scholarship is named in honor of a Wake Forest graduate and former student of Poteat. It was established by Dail’s daughter, Barbara D. Whiteman, and her husband, Robert Whiteman. Barbara Whiteman is a Wake Forest graduate and a former university trustee.
- Philip Gregory Rogers of Greenville. Rogers, the son of Gregory and Leslie Rogers, will graduate from J.H. Rose High School. He is a member of Oakmont Baptist Church.
- Anna Dorsett Lea of Rocky Mount. Lea, the daughter of Philip and Jo Anne Lea, will graduate from Rocky Mount Senior High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church.
- Rena Catherine Keen of Four Oaks. Keen, the daughter of Harold and Barbara Keen, will graduate from South Johnston High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church Four Oaks.
- Tracey Marie McKinzie of Wilmington. McKinzie, the daughter of Warren and Margie McKinzie, will graduate from John T. Hoggard High School. She is a member of Whispering Pines Baptist Church.
- Cristina Louise Kazleman of Jacksonville. Kazleman, the daughter of Jane Kazleman and the late Theodore Kazleman, will graduate from Richlands High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville.
- Julia Michelle Koch of Raleigh. Koch, the daughter of David and Lisa Koch, will graduate from Athens Drive High School. She is a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
- Kyle Robert Layman of Burlington. Layman, the son of Matthew and Linza Layman, will graduate from Walter M. Williams High School. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington.
- Elizabeth Rose Currin of Laurinburg. Currin, the daughter of James Currin Jr. and Glenda Currin, will graduate from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Laurinburg.
- Sally Page Taylor of West End. Taylor, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Taylor, will graduate from Union Pines High School. She is a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
- Lauren Elizabeth Pressley of Greensboro. Pressley, the daughter of Stephen and Catherine Pressley, will graduate from Grimsley High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro.
- Tara Ashley Pardue of Harrisburg. Pardue, the daughter of Wayne and Brenda Story, will graduate from Central Cabarrus High School. She is a member of Providence Baptist Church.
- Natalie Nicole Freeland of Charlotte. Freeland, daughter of Michael and Carolyn Freeland, will graduate from Providence High School. She is a member of Providence Baptist Church.
- Katie Cameron Miller of Charlotte. Miller, the daughter of Leslie and Rosalynn Miller, will graduate from Charlotte Latin High School. She is a member of Providence Baptist Church.
- John Joseph Brewington III of Mount Airy. Brewington, the son of John Brewington Jr. and Theresa Brewington, will graduate from Mount Airy High School. He is a member of Mount Airy First Baptist Church.
- Stephanie Diane Hill of Ronda. Hill, the daughter of Michael and Phyllis Hill, will graduate from East Wilkes High School. She is a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.
- George Benjamin Martin of Lattimore. Martin, the son of Marcus and Suzi Martin, will graduate from Crest High School. He is a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
- Tyler Ryan Jordan of Conover. Jordan, the son of Danny and Deborah Jordan, will graduate from Newton-Conover High School. He is a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
- Jason Roger Holloway of Andrews. Holloway, the son of Charles and Regina Holloway, will graduate from Andrews High School. He is a member of Marble Springs Baptist Church.
- Edward Lindell Perry Jr. of Wake Forest. Perry, the son of Edward and Patricia Perry, will graduate from William G. Enloe High School. He is a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
- Ierisha Trasina Davis of Durham. Davis, the daughter of Thomas and Teresa Davis, will graduate from Northern High School. She is a member of Mt. Zoar Baptist Church.
- Jennifer Leigh Holland of Huntersville. Holland, the daughter of Edwin and Debbie Holland, will graduate from North Mecklenburg High School. She is a member of Friendship Missionary Church.
