WFU, WSSU and Salem celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. day

Three college campuses—Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University and Salem College—will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day together from Jan. 15 through Jan. 20. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed nationally on Jan. 20.

Beginning Jan. 15, large blank canvases and art materials will be set up on each campus. Students are invited to paint, draw and write on these canvases until Jan. 20, when the completed murals will be displayed at the main MLK program at WSSU.

Salem College will host a spoken word and open microphone night on Jan. 16 at 8 p.m. in Bryant Hall. Prizes will be awarded for the best performances.

Wake Forest will host the MLK Basketball Tournament in Reynolds Gym Jan. 18 from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. Intramural teams from North Carolina A&T, WSSU, Wake Forest, Johnson C. Smith, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will compete.

A Gym Jam in Reynolds Gym will follow the basketball tournament from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. Admission for the Gym Jam is $3.

Spike Lee’s “Four Little Girls” will be shown in Wake Forest’s Pugh Auditorium on Jan. 20 continuously from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

WSSU will host the main program, “Looking Toward the Future: Life After the Civil Rights Movement,” Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Kenneth R. Williams Auditorium. Winners of a Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools student essay contest will present their essays. WSSU and Wake Forest choirs will also perform.

All events, with the exception of the Gym Jam at Wake Forest, are free and open to the public.
