Activist performance sponsored by WFU
Wake Forest University Department of Theatre, together with the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), will present internationally acclaimed performance artist Tim Miller on March 20. Miller will perform one of his most recent works, “Glory Box,” at 8 p.m. at SECCA on Marguerite Drive in Winston-Salem.
Taking its name from the Australian term for hope chest, “Glory Box” is a politically charged exploration of Miller’s struggles for immigration rights for gay people and their partners.
Miller has taught performance in the theater department at the University of California at Los Angeles and in the dance program at California State University at Los Angeles since 1990. His work has received numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The March 20 performance is a preview of a longer, more intensive residency scheduled for fall of 2003. Wake Forest, along with SECCA, North Carolina School of the Arts and other Piedmont organizations will bring Miller back for a multi-week visit including master classes, lectures, readings, performances and workshops.
The March 20 performance is free and open to the public. However, the organizers ask for a donation at the door. Proceeds will be used to help fund the fall residency, which will be in conjunction with Wake Forest’s theme for the upcoming school year: “Fostering Dialogue 2003-2004, Civil Discourse in an Academic Community.” The new theme will explore the dialogues that should take place within ourselves and with others when we are challenged by strange, new, or discomforting ideas.
