In addition, Backus received an academic scholarship to the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., where he was artist-in-residence and football coach while completing his studies for a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

At his March 22 performance, Backus will play selections from Bach, Beethoven and Liszt. He will also play music by Wake Forest composer-in-residence Dan Locklair.
