Members of the media are invited to Wake Forest University tonight to hear a lecture by W. Deen Mohammed, leader and international spokesman for the American Society of Muslims. The lecture, sponsored by the university’s religion department, is free and open to the public.
Mohammed will present the lecture “Respecting Human Dignity: A Prerequisite for 21st Century Leaders” at 7 p.m. in Wait Chapel. Parking has been reserved for media in Lot P, located on the east side of Wait Chapel. Television cameras may set up on the balcony stairs. The News Service has been told that there will not be an opportunity for interviews at tonight’s event.
Mohammed is the son of Elijah Mohammed, the former leader of the Nation of Islam. The American Society of Muslims represents more than two million American Muslims, while the modern Nation of Islam represents approximately 200,000 American Muslims.
A leading member of the World Conference on Religion and Peace, Mohammed also served on former U.S. President Bill Clinton’s Religious Advisory Council. He also serves on the Peace Council and the World Supreme Council of Mosques.
