The Wake Forest University music department will present the talent of some of its most gifted students and faculty at five recitals during the first three months of the year. All recitals are free and held in Brendle Recital Hall in Scales Fine Arts Center on the Wake Forest campus.
On Jan. 30, Wake Forest tenor Joseph Hipps will present a senior honor’s recital at 8 p.m. He will perform selections by Italian, French, German and American composers, including works by Vencenzo Bellini, Henry Duparc, Schubert, and Katherine Davis.
Performing a senior honor’s recital on Feb. 22 at 3 p.m., soprano Allison Jones will present works by Handel, Stravinsky and Strauss as well as the contemporary pieces, “Three Dunbar Songs” by Betty Jackson King and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hand” by Margaret Bonds.
Thomas Turnbull will accompany both Hipps and Jones on piano. On March 4, senior Christopher Seal will present a classical guitar recital at 8 p.m.
On March 19 at 8 p.m., Wake Forest Visiting Professor of Music Lorraine DiSimone will present a voice recital with accompanist Peter Kairoff, professor of music. A mezzo-soprano who has performed extensively in concert and on the opera stage, DiSimone will perform selections by Brahms, Schumann and Wolf.
DiSimone has sung with symphonies and operas throughout the United States and Europe, including the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, the Prague State Opera, the Augsburg Philharmonic and the Glimmerglass Opera.
She made her Carnegie Hall debut as Fenena in Verdi’s “Nabucco” with the New York Grand Opera and since that time has been a soloist at Carnegie Hall in several performances.
Rounding out the early semester recitals, Sasha Gee Enegren, a Wake Forest junior and presidential scholar in bassoon performance, will perform on March 20 at 8 p.m.
She will play two bassoon solos and several duets, including Lubos Sluka’s “Sonata for Bassoon and Piano” and “Petite Suite for Flute and Bassoon” by Pierre Max Dubois.
Other Wake Forest musicians performing with Enegren are freshman Cassaundra Young on flute, senior Woody Giles on piano, senior Fia Rotter on oboe and sophomore Scott Hardison on trombone. Ann Listokin will accompany on piano.
