WFU music department announces April/May concert calendar

Wake Forest University’s department of music will present 10 concerts in April and May. All concerts are free and open to the public. Performances are held in Brendle Recital Hall.

APRIL

April 7-8: World Premiere of Salon Opera, “L’isola disabitata,” 8 p.m.
The department of music will present the world premiere of “L’isola disabitata,” a salon opera by Manuel del Pópulo Vicente García. Composed in 1831 but never published or performed, the opera has been transcribed from the original manuscript by Teresa Radomski, professor of music at Wake Forest. The one-act opera is written for four singers and piano. Two Wake Forest alumni and two current Wake Forest music students will perform the leading roles. Thomas Turnbull will play the piano score. The production will be directed by James Dodding, visiting professor of music.

April 9: Senior Bassoon Recital, 8 p.m.
Wake Forest senior Sasha Gee Enegren will present a senior bassoon recital. She will perform pieces by Lobos Sluka, Camille Saint-Saëns, Stuart McKay, Mozart and Mendelssohn. Staff accompanist Marlene Hoirup will accompany on piano.

April 13: Collegium Musicum Concert, 8 p.m.
The Wake Forest Collegium Musicum will present a concert titled “German Music of the Renaissance and Baroque Periods.” The Viola da gamba Concert, under the direction of music instructor Selina Carter, will perform compositions by Heinrich Isaac, Paul Hofhaimer, Arnold von Bruck, Hans Leo Hassler, and Johann Schein.

April 15: Faculty Recital, 8 p.m.
Visiting Professor of Music Lorraine DiSimone, mezzo soprano, and Professor of Music Peter Kairoff, piano, will perform a recital featuring songs by Giuseppe Verdi, Hugo Wolf and Brahms as well as a large section of Schumann’s Liederkries Op. 39 Song Cycle. English and French arias from “Carmen,” “Tales of Hoffman,” Kurt Weill’s “Street Scene” and David Amram’s “Twelfth Night” will also be performed.

April 19: University Jazz Ensemble, 8 p.m.
The Wake Forest Jazz Ensemble and the Chamber Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert featuring graduating senior Catherine Keen on alto saxophone in a Brazilian jazz composition titled “Summer Serenade.” The concert will also feature arrangements of songs by Stevie Wonder, classic big band composers and chamber jazz compositions. The Jazz Ensemble will be conducted by Pat Tucker, instructor of music, and the Chamber Jazz Ensemble will be directed by bassist Matt Kendrick, adjunct instructor at Wake Forest.

April 21: University Orchestra Concert, 8 p.m.
The University Orchestra will perform a concert featuring selections by Carl Maria von Weber, including an overture written for Schiller’s drama “Turandot” and Paul Hindemith. The concert will also include the senior honors project of Sasha Gee Enegren, who will perform Mozart’s “Bassoon Concerto” with the orchestra. The concert will be conducted by David Hagy, director of orchestra.

April 24: Student Chamber Music Concert, 3 p.m.
The Student Chamber Music concert will feature the music of less-familiar composers such as Irving Fine, Eugene Bozza, T. Stewart Smith and John Harmon, and their compositions for woodwind quintet, saxophone quartet, and clarinet and flute choirs. String students will play duos, trios and quartets from more familiar composers including Beethoven, Dvořák and Georg Philipp Telemann.

April 26: Spring Choral Concert, 8 p.m.
The Wake Forest Concert Choir, Collegium Vocal Ensemble and Wake Forest Chorale will perform a concert titled “Music About Music,” featuring works whose texts describe singing, the playing of instruments or the power of music. The concert will include songs by Gerald Finzi, John Muehleisen, Earl George and Henry Purcell. The featured work will be the first Wake Forest performance of composer-in-residence Dan Locklair’s “Instant Culture,” a choral drama for chorus, actors and piano.

April 27: University Wind Ensemble, 8 p.m.
The University Wind Ensemble will perform a concert under the direction of Kevin Bowen, director of bands.

MAY

May 4: Senior Piano Recital, 8 p.m.
Wake Forest senior Derek Shore will perform a piano recital.
