Art critic Eleanor Heartney to visit WFU

Art critic and writer Eleanor Heartney will give a lecture titled “The Incarnational Imagination” at Wake Forest University at 3 p.m. Sept. 22 in Scales Fine Arts Center, Room 102.

Heartney, who is well known in the New York and international art worlds, is often praised for her jargon-free approach to art criticism. In her lecture, she will discuss issues from her recent book, “Postmodern Heretics: the Catholic Imagination in Contemporary Art.” Expressions of sexuality, death, and religion in contemporary art, as well as what she perceives as their cynical politicization, are among the concerns she addresses.

Heartney has written for numerous publications, including Art in America and The New York Times. She is the guest curator of “Thresholds: Expressions of Art and Spiritual Life” which is currently exhibiting at the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art in Greensboro and at Guilford College until Oct. 23.

The lecture is part of the Visiting Artist Program sponsored by the Wake Forest department of art and the Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery.
