Wake Forest music department announces January-February concert calendar

Wake Forest University’s Department of Music will present seven concerts in January and February. All concerts will be held in Wake Forest’s Brendle Recital Hall, unless otherwise noted, and are free and open to the public.

Jan. 22: Carolina Piano Trio; 3 p.m.
Violinist Jacqui Carrasco, cellist Elizabeth Anderson and pianist Barbara McKenzie will perform a concert to celebrate Mozart’s 250th year. The performance will include Mozart’s “Piano Trio in C Major, K. 548,” a selection from Arvo Pärt’s arrangement of Mozart’s “Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 189e” and Maurice Ravel’s “Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello.”

Jan. 23: “To the Stars” with Dan Locklair; 8 p.m.; Wait Chapel
Dan Locklair, organist, composer-in-residence and professor at Wake Forest, will perform an organ recital. The concert will feature “Constellations,” Locklair’s award-winning 1980 concerto for organ and percussion. John R. Beck, Wake Forest music faculty member, will play percussion. Locklair will also perform other solo pieces as well as Telemann’s “Trio Sonata in C Major” with Wake Forest music faculty members Kathryn Levy on flute and Stewart Carter on recorder.

Jan. 28: Senior Voice Recital with Mitchell Dean; 8 p.m.
Wake Forest senior Mitchell Dean, baritone, will perform a concert featuring works by Handel, Schubert, Erich Korngold, Francis Poulenc, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. He will be accompanied by pianist Thomas Turnbull.

Feb 2: Faculty Recital with Richard Heard and Barbara DeMaio Caprilli; 8 p.m.
Wake Forest music faculty members Richard Heard, tenor; with Salem College guests Barbara DeMaio Caprilli, soprano; and Pamela Howland, piano will perform a recital. The concert will include arias and duets from Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca” and Umberto Giordano’s “Andrea Chenier,” traditional spirituals and the song cycle “Southern Comfort” written by Doug Borwick, professor of music at Salem College.

Feb. 15: Faculty Recital with Jacqui Carrasco; 8 p.m.
Wake Forest music faculty members Jacqui Carrasco, violin, and Peter Kairoff, piano will perform a concert featuring Brahms’ “Violin Sonata in A Major, op. 100,” Schumann’s “Violin Sonata no. 2 in D minor, op. 121” and “chestnuts” from Fritz Kreisler and Manuel Ponce.

Feb. 18: Senior Voice Recital with Christal Boyd; 8 p.m.
Senior Christal Boyd, soprano, will perform a recital accompanied by Ann Listokin on piano.

Feb. 25: Christopher Giles and Lucille Harris Competitions in Musical Performance; 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The 29th annual Christopher Giles and Lucille S. Harris Competitions in Musical Performance will be held. The open competition will be held at 1 p.m., and the piano competition will be held at 6 p.m.
