Wake Forest music department announces March concert calendar

Wake Forest University’s Department of Music will present four concerts in March. All concerts will be held in Brendle Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.

March 2: University Orchestra Concert; 8 p.m.

The Wake Forest University Orchestra will present a concert featuring the winners of Wake Forest’s annual Concerto Competition. Soloists will include flutists Valerie Menendez and Chrissie Eckhardt, violist Natalie Williams, mezzo-soprano Amanda Castellone, violinist Morgan Brubaker, monochordist Jason Nguyen and hornist Lance Holly. The concert will include a variety of pieces, including Dominico Cimarosa’s “Concerto for Two Flutes” and a modern scoring of several Mozart piano sonata movements by Greensboro composer Russell Peck.

March 18: Faculty Recital with Lee Morgan, mezzo soprano; 8 p.m.

Lee Morgan, voice instructor at Wake Forest, will perform a recital of selections by Reynaldo Hahn, Gabriel Fauré, Franz Schubert, Camille Saint-Saëns, Kurt Weill and others. She will be accompanied by pianist Thomas Turnbull.

March 21: University Concert Choir Home Concert; 8 p.m.

The Wake Forest University Concert Choir, a 55-member mixed ensemble, will perform a home concert featuring a variety of works, including pieces by Johann Pachelbel, Gregorio Allegri and Pablo Delano, selected movements from Mozart’s Requiem as well as hymns, folk songs and spirituals. The highlight of the performance will be Eric Whitacre’s “Cloudburst,” which calls on the choir to imitate the sounds of a thunderstorm and celebrate the renewing energy of the earth.

March 25: Recital with Kate Lambert, mezzo-soprano.; 3 p.m.

Mezzo-soprano and Wake Forest graduate Kate Lambert will perform a recital including music by Samuel Barber, Aaron Copeland, Ned Rorem and Richard Strauss. In honor of Mozart’s 250th birthday, she will also perform duets by Mozart with Teresa Radomski, professor of music at Wake Forest.
