Media Advisory: NFL and referee labor dispute: Can players overcome “substitute teacher” syndrome?

Though the locked-out NFL officials return to work tonight, can the league regain its reputation?

Wake Forest sports communication expert John Llewellyn is available to talk about the fallout from the strike. “Legitimacy is quickly lost under the onslaught of critical public scrutiny. Equally damaging to the NFL’s reputation is how eager teams were to cheat and otherwise seek improper advantage — like the substitute teacher effect,” said Lewellyn. “It’s certainly been convenient, and erroneous, to attribute all that has happened to the league’s reputation to substitute refs.”

John Llewellyn is an expert on crisis communication related to scandals and damage repair. He is available for comment today.
