Wake Forest partners with area universities for MLK Read-In

Wake Forest University is partnering again with area universities to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Wake Forest students will join Winston-Salem State University and UNC School of the Arts students to participate virtually in this year’s MLK Read-In on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 12 – 1:30 p.m.

The event promotes King’s legacy of service, literacy and community empowerment for children ages 4-11. Children will be placed in small virtual groups, each with a college student volunteer “read-in buddy” who will lead them through various activities from the MLK Read-In Day Kit. The kits will be distributed the week before the event and will contain a new, age-appropriate, civil rights-themed book as well as a donated, age-appropriate children’s book.

The program is organized by Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, HandsOn NWNC, and UNC School of the Arts.

To register a child, parents or guardians must complete the sign-up form today (Jan. 15).  For additional information about the 2021 MLK Read-In, contact Chelii Broussard at broussardch@wssu.edu or Camry Wilborn at wilborcc@wfu.edu.

MLK Keynote Speech and Celebration

WSSU and Wake Forest’s long-time annual partnership featuring a keynote speaker and celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will not be held this year, but will return in 2022. Each institution will recognize faculty, staff and student members through their “Building the Dream” Award in March.
