Wake Forest Pianist to Perform Music of John Cage

Wake Forest University pianist Louis Goldstein will perform the avant-garde work of contemporary composer John Cage in a concert Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Featuring a performance of “Sonatas and Interludes” by John Cage, the free concert begins at 8 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall. Goldstein has recently released a CD, “John Cage: Sonatas and Interludes and Dreams,” that includes the composition.

A Wake Forest music faculty member since 1979, Goldstein also serves on the faculty of American Foundations, a graduate seminar offered at Reynolda House Museum of American Art.

“Sonatas and Interludes” is the capstone, summarizing work of a period John Cage later identified as “intentionally expressive,” according to Goldstein.

For the performance of Cageís piece, mutes of various materials are placed between the strings of the piano keys.

Goldsteinís performance is part of the universityís Year of the Arts, a yearlong celebration of the arts featuring special concerts, plays and exhibits.
