A.R. Ammons to Read His Poems at WFU

Award-winning poet A.R. Ammons will read from his works on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Wake Forest University.

The free 8 p.m. reading will be held in Scales Fine Arts Center, Room 102.

Ammons, twice the winner of the National Book Award for his poetry, is a 1949 graduate of Wake Forest. He is Wake Forest’s poet-in-residence for the spring semester and will teach an advanced poetry workshop for Wake Forest students. A native of southeastern North Carolina, he now lives in Ithaca, N.Y., where he is Goldwin Smith Professor of Poetry at Cornell University.

Many of the poems in his most recent book, “North Carolina Poems,” are based on his experiences growing up on a farm near Whiteville.

Ammons last visited Winston-Salem in April 1995, when Wake Forest hosted “Say Things and Gather About,” a symposium about his work.

The poetry reading is part of Wake Forest’s Year of the Arts, a yearlong celebration of the arts including special lectures, concerts, performances and other events.
