Paul Brown, news director at radio station WFDD at Wake Forest University, has received a first-place award for radio enterprise reporting from The Associated Press.
Brown won the award for the story, “R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Workers,” which aired last June on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” and WFDD, an NPR member station. Reported and produced by Brown, the story profiled tobacco workers and the stresses under which they live as the tobacco industry experiences increased governmental scrutiny and attacks.
The award was presented to WFDD at the annual meeting of the N.C. Associated Press Broadcasters April 26 in Raleigh.
Brown, who joined WFDD in 1987 as production manager, planned and created the station’s news department, and became its first news director in 1993. He was selected in 1993 as a WGBH/Corporation for Public Broadcasting Public Affairs Fellow.
Two years ago, Brown received a grant from the Fund for Folk Culture underwritten by the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund to produce the music documentary, “Breaking Up Christmas: A Blue Ridge Mountain Holiday,” distributed nationally by NPR last year.
