Freshmen to Gather in Newly-Renovated Chapel

Wake Forest freshmen and their families will gather in Wait Chapel at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, for New Student Convocation. The event is the first in the chapel since it was closed last May to allow workers to install a new ceiling and flooring, as well as upgrade the building’s air conditioning. Since the job will not be finished until late September, the university is bringing 2,600 folding chairs especially for the event. The chapel’s permanent chairs, which were refinished during the summer, will be returned in September.

Renovations Completed/Other Projects Underway

Wake Forest students return to find several construction and renovations projects that have been completed or are underway. Completed projects include extensive renovations to Wingate Hall and the Student Apartments complex. Work has begun on a 70,000-square-foot Information Systems Building and is nearly finished on a new courtyard between Tribble Hall and Benson University Center. Construction continues on a new residence hall near Polo Road.

Returning Students Arrive During Weekend

Sophomores, juniors and seniors will arrive on campus during the weekend. Residence halls will be open for students to move in Saturday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 12-5 p.m. Registration for classes will be held Monday, Aug. 25, and Tuesday, Aug. 26. Classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 27.

Events to Celebrate Pakistan’s 50th Anniversary

Events of “Pakistan at 50,” a conference at Wake Forest, will celebrate the country’s founding. Among the free, public events is a performance by sitar player Brian Silver with Pakistani tabla player Tari Kahn at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, in Scales Fine Arts Center’s Ring Theatre. On Saturday, Aug. 30, the documentary, “Dare to Dream: The Making of the Film ‘Jinnah,'” will be shown from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Carswell Hall’s Annenberg Forum. Akbar Ahmed, Cambridge professor and screenwriter of “Jinnah,” will lead a discussion. Mohammed Ali Jinnah is credited as Pakistan’s founder. For more information, call 910-759-5453 or 759-5449.
