Cultural Faire Features Food and Music

An Ethnic Heritage Faire at Wake Forest University will offer glimpses into other cultures through exhibits, food samples, and dance and music performances on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 9 p.m. in the Benson University Center, Room 401. As part of the Year of Globalization and Diversity, the free and public event will feature aspects of Asian, African, Latin American, Native American, Greek, Spanish, Italian and Indian cultures. Entertainment will include the Middle Eastern dance troupe Magic Carpet, the steel band Shadz and the mariachi band Los Viajeros. Wake Forest student groups, such as Islam Awareness, and area vendors will have booths and exhibits set up during the Faire. Discussion on Civil Rights and Race Relations

Civil rights movements in the United States and abroad and their effects on race relations will be the focus of “Civil Rights: Can We Do The Right Thing?” a panel discussion at Wake Forest from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the Benson University Center’s third floor lounge. The panel will feature visiting associate politics professor Yomi Durotoye, associate politics professor Wei-chin Lee, assistant history professor Simone Caron, and professor emeritus of religion George McLeod Bryan. The free and public event is part of the Benson Center’s “Discovery Series.”

Living the RV Dream

For those who dream of going on the road in an RV when they retire, anthropologists David and Dorothy Counts will discuss “RV Life and Community” in a public lecture at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, at Wake Forest’s Museum of Anthropology. The couple wrote the book, “Over the Next Hill: an Ethnography of RVing Seniors in North America.”

“SNL” Comedian Will Perform at Wake Forest

Comedian Jim Breuer, the “Saturday Night Live” cast member best known for his “Goat Boy” character, will perform at Wake Forest on Friday, Oct. 16. The show begins at 8 p.m. in Wait Chapel. Tickets are $12 and available at all TicketMaster locations. Breuer, who has performed stand-up comedy since his college days, is a third year veteran of “Saturday Night Live.” Breuer has co-starred in the movie “Half Baked” and hosted his own comedy shows on MTV and Comedy Central.” Breuer is available for advance phone interviews and interviews on Oct. 16.
