Theater season opens with Kanin’s ‘Goodbye, My Fancy’

Goodbye, My Fancy coverFay Kanin’s romantic comedy “Goodbye, My Fancy” will open at Wake Forest University Sept. 24.

The University Theater production continues Sept. 25 and 29- 30 and Oct. 1 – 3.

The setting of “Goodbye, My Fancy” is the Good Hope College for Women, where the play’s heroine, Congresswoman Agatha Reed (junior Jennifer Wynne), had been expelled 20 years ago.

Having achieved professional success, Reed returns to campus to receive an honorary degree, only to learn that the man she loves — her former history professor and now college president (freshman Cary Donaldson) — may no longer share her ideals. Her campus visit forces her to choose between two suitors, while it prompts the college community to reexamine its values.

J.K. Curry, assistant professor in Wake Forest’s theater department, will direct the play.

“This is really a fun play that ran more than a year on Broadway,” said Curry. “Audience members of all ages will be charmed by the characters and storyline.”

All performances begin at 8 p.m. in the Scales Fine Arts Center’s Main Stage Theater, except a 2 p.m. matinee on Oct. 3. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students, and may be purchased at the University Box Office or by calling 336-758-5295. The box office is open weekdays, from noon-5:30 p.m. Information is also available from the theater department Web site at www.wfu.edu/Academic-departments/Theatre/.
