Three Wake Forest students have won the international Mathematical Contest in Modeling. The contest is designed to “stimulate and improve problem solving skills.”
The team competed against approximately 400 teams representing several different countries. For four days in February, the three-member team drafted a 40-page solution to a complex math problem involving the assignment of radio channels to a network of transmitter locations to avoid interference.
Junior Dan Durand, senior Kevin Woods and senior Jacob Kline found out Tuesday they were winners.
The team will have their solution published in a math journal this fall.
The math club will “roll the quad,” a tradition after athletic victories, to celebrate the achievement, on Wednesday, March 15, at 3 p.m.
The 16th annual contest is sponsored by COMAP Inc., a nonprofit organization that produces math teaching materials. The contest is also funded by the National Security Agency.
