Wake Forest University’s department of music will celebrate American composer Aaron Copland’s upcoming 100th birthday with a free concert of his works on Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall.
The concert will feature Wake Forest pianist Louis Goldstein performing Copland’s “Piano Fantasy.” Wake Forest faculty members and students will then perform Copland’s chamber orchestra version of the “Ballet for Martha” Suite for the ballet, “Appalachian Spring.”
Copland’s 100th birthday would have been Nov. 14. He died in 1990. Copland was born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents from Poland and Lithuania. He earned the nickname “The Dean of American Composers” after publishing his American ballets “Billy the Kid” in 1938; “Rodeo” in 1942; and “Appalachian Spring” in 1944. “Appalachian Spring” won a Pulitzer Prize that year.
Orchestra Director David Hagy will lead Wake Forest faculty members Peter Kairoff (piano), Kathryn Levy (flute), Linda Julian (clarinet), Jonathan Julian (bassoon), Jacqui Carrasco(violin), Selina Carter (cello), John Spuller (bass), Katharine Boyes (piano), and David Levy (violin). The following Wake Forest students will also perform in the orchestra: Zachary Bradley (violin), Jessica Dial (viola), Hugh Swaso(viola), and Catherine Gibson (violin).
Susan Borwick, professor of music at Wake Forest, will comment on both pieces and offer a glimpse into Copland’s life.
