Wake Forest student wins Marshall scholarship

Alan Trammell,Alan Trammell, a senior at Wake Forest University, has been selected to receive a British Marshall Scholarship.

Trammell, a resident of Chester, Va., is the son of Patricia and Marshall W. Trammell and attended L.C. Bird High School.

The scholarships, financed by the British government, provide an opportunity for 40 American students who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential to continue their studies for two years at any British university.

Trammell plans to study at the London School of Economics and Political Science in the Nationalism and Ethnicity Program.

Long regarded as one of the highest undergraduate accolades, the Marshall Scholarships cover the scholar’s tuition cost, books, travel and living expenses. The Marshall Scholarships were established in 1953 as a British gesture of thanks to the people of the United States for the assistance received after World War II under the Marshall Plan.

Trammell holds a Nancy S. Reynolds Scholarship, a full-cost merit scholarship at Wake Forest. As a Wake Forest undergraduate, Trammell has conducted research in the Sorbian community of eastern Germany and within the Russian community in Latvia. His research was supported by a Richter Scholarship, a competitive, independent study scholarship for Wake Forest students. He is majoring in economics and German.

Trammell was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa as a junior. He is principal clarinetist in the university’s orchestra. He organized a service trip for Wake Forest students to orphanages in the Dominican Republic and is president of the campus chapter of the Wesley Foundation, a United Methodist campus ministry group.

Trammell ran the 1999 Richmond Marathon and qualified for the Boston Marathon.

Prominent former Marshall Scholars include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer; U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt; New York Times foreign affairs columnist Tom Freidman; and scientist/inventor Ray Dolby.
