Panel discusses sanctions against Iraq on March 21 at WFU

The speakers include Denis Halliday, Rania Masri and Anthony Arnove. Deepa Kumar, assistant visiting professor of communication at Wake Forest, will moderate the event.

Halliday is a former assistant secretary general of the United Nations and United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq. He served in the United Nations for 34 years before resigning in 1998 in protest against the sanctions. He currently teaches at Swarthmore College.

Masri is a member of Peace Action and Al-Awda, the Palestinian Right of Return Organization. She was the 1999 recipient of the International Human Rights Award of North Carolina and is the coordinator of the Iraq Action Coalition, an Internet-based group that works to raise awareness of the impact of sanctions against Iraq.

Arnove is an editor at South End Press. He recently edited, “Iraq Under Siege: The Deadly Impact of Sanctions and War.” His writing has appeared in Financial Times, Left Business Observer, International Socialist Review, Diaspora, Financial Times and other publications. He is a member of the International Socialist Organization and recently traveled to Iraq as part of an interfaith human rights delegation.

Wake Forest’s Center for International Studies and Office of Student Life will sponsor the event. Campus chapters of Amnesty International, the Progressive Action Network and the International Socialist Organization are also sponsors.
