Performance to feature 15th century music of Maximilian’s court

With lutes, krummhorns, cornetts and other period instruments, the Wake Forest University Collegium Musicum will present “The Triumphs of Maximilian I” at 8 p.m. Nov. 14 in the university’s Brendle Recital Hall.

Maximilian I was the King of the Romans from 1486 to 1493, when he became Roman Emperor-elect. A patron of the arts, he supported many musicians and composers in his court. The Collegium Musicum, which includes the Collegium Musicum Vocal Ensemble, the Renaissance Wind Band and the Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, will perform several selections by some of the court composers.

The Vocal Ensemble will sing sacred selections by Heinrich Isaac and Pierre de la Rue, and secular pieces by Ludwig Senfl and Issac, including Senfl’s well-known “Das Glaut zu Speyer,” which imitates the ringing of church bells. Brian Gorelick, associate professor of music at Wake Forest, directs the group.

The Renaissance Wind Band will perform selections by Isaac, Senfl and others. The Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble will perform four segments of a mass by Senfl and two works by Paul Hofhaimer. Stewart Carter, professor of music at Wake Forest, directs both instrumental groups.

Musicum is devoted to the performance of early music, using The Collegium period performance practices and reproductions of period instruments.

Admission is free. For information, call 336-758-5364.
