Anthropology Museum to offer after-school programs

Wake Forest University’s Museum of Anthropology will offer “Exploring World Cultures,” a series of after-school programs for children in grades 1-5. The first program will begin March 4.

Each session runs from 4:15 p.m.- 5:30 p.m.

The four-part series will begin with “Shadow Play.” Students will learn about Turkish and Indonesian shadow puppet theater. They will handcraft shadow puppets and learn to use them.

On March 18, the museum will offer “Adinkra: Gifts from the Golden Stool.” Children will read the Ashante legend of the golden stool and King Adinkra’s unfortunate fate. They will learn how to make adinkra cloth.

On April 1, the museum will present “The Japanese Lunch Bunch.” Children will learn about lunch boxes from other parts of the world and make their own Japanese “bento” boxes.

The after-school series will conclude with “Egyptian Mummies Inside and Out” on April 15. Children will learn what a mummy is and why ancient Egyptians made them. They will find out how canopic jars were used and make their own jars.

Students can register for the whole series or individual sessions. The cost is $15 for each session or $35 for all four sessions. Museum Friends receive a discount. To register, call the museum at 336-758-5282 or send e-mail to moa@wfu.edu. Additional information is available on the museum’s Web site, www.wfu.edu/MOA. Each session is limited to 15 students.
