Fire damages stage, set of musical in mainstage theatre in Scales Center

A fire late in the afternoon on April 3 damaged the stage of the MainStage Theatre in the Scales Fine Arts Center at Wake Forest University.

No one was hurt in the incident.

The fire began on the set of the musical “Into the Woods” while the theater was empty. The set and the stage were damaged by fire, water and smoke.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Winston-Salem Fire Department and the Wake Forest police department.

The cost of damages has not been determined, yet.

“Into the Woods” is a production of Wake Forest University Theatre. It opened April 2 and was scheduled to be performed at 7:30 p.m. April 3, at 2 p.m. on April 4, and at 7:30 p.m. April 7-10. The theatre department cancelled the April 3 and 4 performances; an announcement will be made later about the remainder of the performances.

Police were alerted to the fire by a fire alarm in the theatre at 5:34 p.m. Officers and firefighters were on the scene in minutes. The first officers arrived by 5:36 p.m.

The fire set off sprinklers in the stage area. Firefighters also helped extinguish the blaze.
