You’re an expert. You’re passionate about an issue. You want to add your voice to the conversation. Op-eds provide readers with diverse opinions on timely news issues, but also provide a fresh perspective or suggested course of action. Op-ed pieces can both surprise and influence readers, and bring recognition to the author and the University.
National newspapers, where everyone hopes to be published, receive hundreds of submissions each day. Competition is fierce. Placements in regional and local papers or in outlets associated with your field also raise visibility for your expertise and add to your portfolio.
If you are planning to submit an op-ed or guest column… or you have already submitted one, please let the news office know (media@wfu.edu). It is best practice to submit your op-ed to one media outlet at a time.
Op-ed Basics:
Timing is critical.
- Anticipate the news. Think ahead to upcoming events. Prepare and submit the op-ed in advance.
- Monitor current news. Respond within 24 hours when possible.
Get straight to the point.
Have an original hook on one clear subject. Facts boost credibility.
Write a catchy headline and first graph, and a memorable last line.
You have 10 seconds to interest readers. People often read the first and last lines of an op-ed to decide if they want to read it.
Note
Visit the Op-Ed Project website for tips on getting started. Workshops and learning tools are also available for those who want to learn more.
