Wake Forest dance concert to feature guest choreographers

The 20-member Wake Forest University Dance Company will perform a fall dance concert Nov. 16-18 at 8 p.m. at Scales Fine Arts Center’s Mainstage.

The dance concert will feature a new jazz piece, “Left of Center,” choreographed for the company by Kenneth Green, a faculty member at Spelman College and a Disney choreographer.

The program will also include “Run with Scissors,” a work reset for the Wake Forest Dance Company by Andre Tyson, who teaches dance at the University of Wisconsin and is a former member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Four local choreographers have also worked with the dance company this fall to prepare for the dance concert. Nina Danilova, who teaches dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts, has restaged “Pas d’ action” from “La Bayadere” for the group.

Nina Maria Lucas, director of the dance program at Wake Forest, has choreographed a new work set to Betty Jackson King’s composition, “Seasonal Sketches.” Wake Forest assistant music professor and pianist Katharine Boyes will provide accompaniment.

Fanchon Cordell, who teaches at Wake Forest and the School of the Arts, has recreated excerpts from Bournonville’s “Napoli” for the Wake Forest dancers. B.J. Sullivan, a visiting dance instructor at Wake Forest this fall, has created a piece for the dance company called “sitting for forgiveness.”

Tickets are $10; $5 for students, senior citizens and children. They may be purchased at the university box office at 336-758-5295. The box office is open weekdays, noon-5:00 p.m.
