Nigerian woodcarver to give demonstration at Wake Forest

Nigerian master woodcarver Lamidi Olonade Fakeye will give a demonstration at Wake Forest University on March 23.

The woodcarving demonstration will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 2 (the sculpture studio) of Scales Fine Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public. A reception with the artist will follow.

A 40-year retrospective of Fakeye’s wood sculpture is currently on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. He is a fifth- generation member of the Fakeye woodcarving family of Orangun, Nigeria. His carvings, including freestanding sculptures, doors, posts and panels, commemorate Yoruba culture. He carved the doors for the Africa Room at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and his work is on display at many museums throughout the United States and Europe.

In his autobiography, “Lamidi Olonade Fakeye: My Life and My Art,” Fakeye traces his development as an artist, beginning with his family background. He is a senior art fellow at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria.
