WFU concert to feature turn of the century French sonatas

Wake Forest University will present “Proust to Picasso,” a concert of French violin and piano sonatas from around the turn of the 20th century, at 8 p.m. March 30 in Brendle Recital Hall.

Guest violinist Richard Luby and pianist Claudia Corona will open the program with “Sonata for Violin and Piano” by Francis Poulenc. The sonata is dedicated to Spanish poet Garcia Lopez and juxtaposes a cafÈ pre-war gaiety with the Picasso’s tragic, fragmented imagery. The concert will also feature Maurice Ravel’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano,” which offers three contrasting movements including one titled “Blues.” The program will conclude with “Sonata No.1 in A, Op. 13” by Gabriel FaurÈ, which is considered by many to be a source for the “little phrase” in Proust’s “Remembrance of Things Past.”

Luby is associate professor of music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America. Corona performs as a pianist of the Trio Silvestre Revueltas in Mexico City. She has given solo recitals in Mexico, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and France and has recorded for national radio and television.

The concert is free and open to the public. Call 336-758-5364 for more information.
