Reynolda Park, Lot Q walkway highlight WFU summer construction projects

Reynolda Park, a landscaped area with loading dock access and limited parking between Kitchin Residence Hall and the new Calloway Center for Business, Mathematics and Computer Science, has been constructed in the former Lot M. The area remains designated Parking Lot M, but Bill Shotton, construction manager for Wake Forest, said it has taken on the name Reynolda Park.

The park features extensive brick sidewalks with more than 100,000 bricks, about half the number of the bricks used in University Plaza (main Quad). Additional lighting, more trees, grass, an irrigation system and a new emergency phone are all features of the new park. There is parking in the renovated area for service vehicles and handicapped vehicles. Ten general parking spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Shotton said an important new feature of the drive around Reynolda Park is that it is one way, eliminating the need for large delivery trucks to back up to the loading dock from the street. Walls were built to screen the loading dock and dumpsters from public view. Students, faculty and staff no longer have to walk across the loading dock when walking by that side of Reynolda Hall, Shotton said.

The new walkway across Lot Q provides handicapped students with improved access to the main campus from the northern section of campus. It also improves safety for all people walking across Lot Q by eliminating the need for them to walk behind and between cars.

“The walkway was done for the safety of all students, but it is really beneficial to handicapped students,” said Greg Scott, a project coordinator in the university’s Facilities Management Department. “There is a tremendous amount of students who come across Lot Q from Polo and Martin residence halls and Student Apartments.”

Work crews had to remove the old asphalt and create a solid base for the new Lot Q walkway. The walkway is raised to accommodate the ramps on either end and to make it visible to motorists in the parking lot. The raised walkway also accommodates future repaving in the parking lot.

Extensive repaving was done in parking lots G, H, P and T. The main entrance to campus from the Reynolda Road gatehouse was repaved to the stop sign at Faculty Drive. The first section of Faculty Drive to the parking lot behind Winston Hall was repaved. Jasper Memory Lane was also repaved.

A student suite in Davis Residence Hall was converted to handicapped-accessible. The project was similar to projects done in Taylor and Poteat residence halls.
