WFU announces September-October line-up for lunchtime music series

Wake Forest University Stores announces the September and October lineup of performers for their newly formed entertainment series called the “Bookstore Lunchtime Music Series.” Concerts are held each week on Thursdays — weather permitting — from 11 a.m. to noon in front of the College Bookstore on University Plaza (Main Quad) and are free and open to the public.

The following groups are scheduled to perform:

Sept. 16: “Big Ron and the Have Mercy Blues Band.” A local blues and jazz band led by Ron Hunter, “Big Ron and the Have Mercy Blues Band,” have appeared at Ziggy’s, Speakeasy Jazz and Fourth Street Jazz & Blues.

Sept. 23: Winston-Salem Symphony Ensemble. One of the Winston-Salem Symphony’s ensembles will play selections from pieces they will perform at the symphony’s Sept. 26 and 28 concerts. The symphony’s ensembles include wind, brass, string and jazz ensembles.

Sept. 30: Guitarist Tom Medlin. Medlin is a local acoustic guitarist who specializes in playing music from the 50s and 60s.

Oct. 7: WFU Clarinet Ensemble. Clarinet players from various Wake Forest groups will perform traditional folk songs and classical selections.

Oct. 14: Winston-Salem Symphony Ensemble. Another of the Winston-Salem Symphony’s ensembles will play selections that will be performed at their Oct. 17 and 19 concerts.

Oct. 21: “Script.” “Script” is a local, contemporary Christian rock band that has played at churches throughout the community. The band includes musicians playing guitar, electric violin, flute and keyboard.

Oct. 28: No concert scheduled due to the university’s Fall Convocation. The series of Thursday concerts was initiated by University Stores as a way to thank the campus and the local community for visiting their stores and as a way to give local talent a venue from which they can promote their music. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair and a bag lunch to enjoy the entertainment.

Musicians or groups interested in performing should contact Val Kelly at 336-758-4276.
