Wake Forest University’s Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery will present two new exhibits that will run from Feb.10 through March 24. “Young Americans,” curated by Heather Stephens and Megan Bush, co-owners of the 31GRAND Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y., will be exhibited in the Main Gallery, and “Memoirs of a Beast” by artist Judith Page will be shown in the Mezzanine Gallery.
An opening reception will be held from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Feb. 10 where Page and Stephens will be present. Page will also discuss her work at a lecture in the gallery at 2:45 p.m. Feb. 9.
“Young Americans” is an exhibition about modern romanticism that features 14 American artists under age 40 who use traditional art mediums to interpret contemporary world issues including politics, celebrity, violence and the media, and other aspects of popular culture. Artists featured are Afruz Amighi, Mike Cockrill, John Copeland, Veronica Cross, Helen Garber, Jeph Gurecka, Carol “Riot” Kane, Jason Clay Lewis, Sean McDevitt, Tom Sanford, Vincent Skeltis, Adam Stennett, Barnaby Whitfield and Jeff Wyckoff.
“Memoirs of a Beast” is an installation exploring Page’s personal history using diaries, photographs and mixed media sculptures. In 1994, Page began creating a series of grotesque humanoid sculptures and installations involving sound, text and music. According to Page, her sculptures “emerge from a Gothic sensibility, a place where horror and beauty exist in close proximity, where innocence encounters depravity, where the spirit is consumed and revived from moment to moment.”
The exhibits are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and 1 – 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, visit www.wfu.edu/art or call 336-758-5585.
