Holocaust survivor Nesse Godin to speak at WFU

Holocaust survivor Nesse Godin will speak at Wake Forest University at 7:30 p.m. March 23 in Pugh Auditorium in Benson University Center. The lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Godin was born in Shauliai, Lithuania, where she lived with her parents and two brothers until the Nazi invasion. She survived the Shauliai, Lithuania Ghetto, the Stutthof Concentration Camp, four labor camps and a death march. She has dedicated her adult life to teaching and sharing memories of the Holocaust and has been said to have an ability to translate the enormity and horror of the Holocaust in a unique, personal way.

Godin is co-president of the Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Friends of Greater Washington, a founding member of several survivor groups, and serves on the boards of many organizations, including the Jewish Community Council and the United Jewish Appeal Federation. She has been a speaker for The Capitol Children’s Museum of Washington, D.C., and regularly works with the United States Holocaust Museum, where her testimony appeared in the 1995 exhibit titled “Liberation.”

Godin has received numerous awards, including the “Myrth Wreath” by Hadassah Council, the Elie Wiesel Holocaust Remembrance medal, and awards from both the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency.

Her life story has appeared in several publications, including The Washingtonian Magazine and Scholastic News. She has also appeared on television and radio programs, including “In Memory of Millions,” hosted by Walter Cronkite; “Beyond Hate” with Bill Moyers; and “Tolerance in America.”
