Italian recorder virtuoso to perform at WFU

Italian recorder virtuoso David Bellugi will perform a concert at Wake Forest University with Peter Kairoff, harpsichordist and professor of music at Wake Forest, at 8 p.m. March 29 in Brendle Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature selections by Baldassare Galuppi, including “Sonata in D minor for Solo Harpsichord,” and music by Georg Philipp Telemann, including “Sonatina in A minor for Recorder and Basso Continuo.” Bellugi and Kairoff began performing together in the 1970s and have performed in California, New York, Italy, Germany and elsewhere.

Bellugi was born to immigrant parents and lived in the United States for the first 20 years of his life. He earned a degree in applied musicology from the University of California at San Diego and then continued his musicological research in early music performance practices in Paris under Antoine Geoffroy-Dechaume, a student of Arnold Dolmetsch.

Bellugi is currently professor of recorder at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory in Florence, where he has taught since 1979. He has performed throughout Europe, Australia, Asia and the United States. He performs classical repertoire from the 15th through the 21st centuries as well as his own transcribed versions of recordings of ethnic musicians.

Kairoff has taught at Wake Forest since 1988. He is an active concert pianist and frequently performs as a harpsichord soloist. He has performed in many cities throughout the world, including Florence, Berlin, Oxford and Charleston, S.C. at the Spoleto Festival.
