Members of the media are invited to Wake Forest University for two public events scheduled as part of the 26th Annual N.C. Indian Youth Unity Conference, which runs from June 7 to 10 at the university. The event, organized under the theme “Ignite the Spirit – Join the Circle,” is a project of the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs.
Each year, the conference draws more than 200 American Indians from all tribes in North Carolina between the ages of 13 and 19 and in grades 9 – 12. The purpose of the event is to foster unity among young American Indians; provide college preparation; emphasize physical, health and career choices; and spiritual and cultural enrichment.
The first public event is the Mister and Miss N.C. Native American Youth Talent Pageant from 6:30 to 10 p.m. June 7 in the university’s Brendle Recital Hall.
The second public event is a “powwow” or social gathering with traditional dance and drumming on Reynolda Meadows, the grassy area near the waterfall at Reynolda Gardens, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. June 8. This will be the first powwow held at Wake Forest.
Organized by the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs, the event is sponsored by the Wake Forest Museum of Anthropology, the theatre department, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Office of Admissions and the humanities program.
