Baptist students awarded scholarships to attend Wake Forest University
Twenty-three North Carolina Baptist students were awarded the William Louis Poteat Scholarship to attend Wake Forest University in the fall 2005. Each scholarship is valued at $11,200 and is renewable for four years for a total value of $44,800.
Named for Wake Forest’s president from 1905 to 1927, the Poteat scholarships are awarded annually to students who are active members of a Baptist church in North Carolina; have demonstrated excellence in leadership and service in their churches; and have excelled in academics.
Poteat Scholars show promise of making vital contributions to the church and the community during college and after graduation. The scholarship recipients are:
- Rachel Faith Adams of Charlotte. Adams is designated the H. Max Craig Jr. Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. She is the daughter of Pamela and Kenneth Adams and a graduate of Harding University High School. She is a member of Eastway Baptist Church.
- Chrystelle Kikelola Boko of Winston-Salem. Boko, the daughter of Tandeka Stanback-Boko and Sylvain Boko, graduated from Mount Tabor High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem.
- Velvet Elizabeth Bryant of Greensboro. Bryant, the daughter of Dora and Joseph Bryant, graduated from James B. Dudley Senior High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Reidsville.
- Katherine Hope Corpening of Wilmington. Corpening, the daughter of Cynthia Corpening and J. H. Corpening II, graduated from John T. Hoggard High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Wilmington.
- Eric Gordon Davis of Wilson. Davis is designated the Nathan D. Dail Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. He is the son of Helen and Gordon Davis and a graduate of Fike High School. He is a member of Raleigh Road Baptist Church.
- Ronald Tyler Davis of Newland. Davis, the son of Martha and Ronald Davis, graduated from Avery County High School. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Crossnore.
- Meghan Elizabeth Dawson of Fayetteville. Dawson, the daughter of Sharon and Donald Anderson, graduated from Pine Forest High School. She is a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
- Amelia Marie DelGrosso of Raleigh. DelGrosso, the daughter of Christine and Steven DelGrosso, graduated from Trinity Academy of Raleigh. She is a member of Providence Baptist Church.
- Michael David Burnside Ferretti of Fayetteville. Ferretti, the son of Susan Billman and Edwin Ferretti III, graduated from Terry Sanford High School. He is a member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church.
- Kara Michelle Fowler of Greenville. Fowler is designated the Evans Family Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. She is the daughter of Debra and James Fowler and a graduate of Junius H. Rose High School. She is a member of Unity Freewill Baptist Church.
- Austin Grayce Hester of Cary. Hester, the daughter of Anita and David Hester, graduated from Athens Drive High School. She is a member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church.
- Roman GianArthur Irvin of Lewisville. Irvin, the son of Chandra and Nathaniel Irvin II, graduated from West Forsyth High School. He is a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
- William Terry Johnson Jr. of Wilkesboro. Johnson, the son of Deborah and William Johnson Sr., graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. He is a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church.
- Rebecca Jill Kirkley of Hamlet. Kirkley, the daughter of Rebecca and Herbert Kirkley, graduated from Richmond Senior High School. She is a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
- Mary Virginia Little of Marion. Little is designated the Benjamin S. Beach Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. She is the daughter of Alice and Stephen Little and a graduate of McDowell High School. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Marion.
- Joshua Pruitt Martin of Mebane. Martin, the son of Tara and Carl Martin, graduated from Eastern Alamance High School. He is a member of Riverside Baptist Church.
- Anna Katherine McLeod of Waxhaw. McLeod, the daughter of Carole and William McLeod Jr., graduated from Weddington High School. She is a member of St. John’s Baptist Church.
- Saiyani Thomas Mukombe of Graham. Mukombe is designated a W. D. and Alberta Holleman Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. He is the son of Carolyn and Rhonald Mukombe and a graduate of Graham High School. He is a member of Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
- Kristin Elaine Olson of Fayetteville. Olson, the daughter of Linda and Mark Olson, graduated from Terry Sanford High School. She is a member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church.
- Sara Elisabeth Smith of High Point. Smith is also designated a W. D. and Alberta Holleman Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. She is the daughter of Robin and Terry Smith and a graduate of Salem Academy. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Jamestown.
- James Daniel Thomason of Cary. Thomason is designated the Roy and Doris Smith Recipient of the William Louis Poteat Scholarship. He is the son of Roberta and Marshall Thomason and a graduate of Cary High School. He is a member of Greenwood Forest Baptist Church.
- Matthew Ryan Triplett of Wilkesboro. Triplett, the son of Sandra and Randy Triplett, graduated from West Wilkes High School. He is a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
- Megan Renee Wright of Kings Mountain. Wright, the daughter of Sherry and David Wright, graduated from Kings Mountain High School. She is a member of David Baptist Church.
