WFU music department announces September-October concert calendar

Sept. 18: Guest Recital with Susan Kane and Katharine Boyes, 3 p.m.
Soprano, Susan Kane and pianist Katharine Boyes will perform a guest recital titled “A Tribute to Honor Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel on her 200th Birthday and other Women Composers of Art Song” featuring songs by Hensel and works by other women composers from various parts of the world. Kane is head of the Vocal Arts Area at California State University, Los Angeles.

Sept. 22: Piano Concert with Louis Goldstein, 8 p.m.
Louis Goldstein, professor of music at Wake Forest, will present a faculty recital featuring piano music written during the last 100 years. Selections will include “Images” by Claude Debussy and music by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Galina Ustvolskaya and others.

Sept. 27: “Percussion Discussion” with John Beck and Friends, 8 p.m.
“Percussion Discussion,” a faculty lecture and recital will feature Wake Forest Percussion Instructor John Beck, along with guest and student musicians.

Oct. 6: Flute Concert with Richard Sherman, 8 p.m.
Richard Sherman, professor of flute at Michigan State University School of Music and principal flutist with the Chautauqua Symphony, will perform a mini-recital and give a master class. The concert program will include “Sonata” by Jindrich Feld, “Sonata” by Francis Poulenc and the world premiere of “Chautauqua Soliloquy” for flute and piano, written by Dan Locklair, professor of music and composer-in-residence at Wake Forest.

Oct. 18: Student Showcase Concert, 8 p.m.
The concert will highlight the talent of Wake Forest’s best student musicians, who are chosen by the music faculty to perform. Performers will include soprano Amanda Castellone; April Dean on violin; tenor Ernest Lewis; and James Zoll on clarinet.

Oct. 23: Student Voice Recital with Ann Bersagel, 3 p.m.
Soprano and Wake Forest senior Ann Bersagel will perform a voice recital accompanied by Thomas Turnbull on piano. The program will include music by Henry Purcell, Handel, Manuel Garcia, Giacomo Puccini, Vicenzo Bellini, Edvard Grieg and others.

Oct. 25: Degas String Quartet Concert and Master Class, 8 p.m.
The Degas String Quartet will perform a concert of contemporary American music and classical quartet literature and hold a master class. The quartet resides in Hickory, N.C., where they hold a residency with the Western Piedmont Symphony. They previously held a three-year residency at Syracuse University, where they became the first graduates of Syracuse University’s Louis Krasner Quartet Program.

Oct. 28-29: Pan-American Choral Festival
The Wake Forest University Choral Program and the Latin American Music Association of Winston-Salem will co-sponsor the inaugural Pan-American Choral Festival.

Panel Discussion, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28: The festival will open with a panel discussion featuring presentations by participating conductors on the choral music of their respective countries.

Concert: 3 p.m. Oct. 29: The Wake Forest University Concert Choir and guest ensembles from the United States and Latin America will present choral compositions from their respective countries. The choirs will combine to sing music from Latin America under the direction of guest conductor Maestro Guido Minoletti, professor of choral music at the University of Chile.

Oct. 31: Midnight Halloween Orchestra Concert, 12 p.m.
The annual Midnight Halloween Orchestra Concert, is a special event full of “tricks and treats.” The concert will feature the Wake Forest University Orchestra playing excerpts from music they will perform in future concerts, while special guests dressed in Halloween costumes interrupt the performance to amuse, shock and scare both the audience and the musicians.
