Wake Forest Police charge man in campus armed robbery

Jason Ryan Carver, 17, of Winston-Salem was charged Sept. 24 with one felony count of robbery with a dangerous weapon and one felony count of alteration of a serial number on a weapon.

University Police had previously arrested Carver shortly after midnight Sept. 23 after a student reported that a suspicious-looking man was walking around in parking lot Q asking for a cigarette light. University Police stopped Carver as he was walking on the path between Martin and Polo residence halls. Officers discovered that Carver was in violation of a trespass warning that had been issued by University Police on a prior occasion.

University Police allege Carver was in possession of a stolen, sawed-off .22-caliber rifle. Two men used a sawed-off firearm to rob a student of his wallet and car on Sept. 18. University Police said it appeared that the serial number on the weapon Carver possessed had been altered.

Carver was charged Sept. 23 with one felony count of each of the following charges: possession of a weapon of mass destruction; possession of a stolen firearm; possession of a weapon on university property; and carrying a concealed weapon. He was also charged with one misdemeanor count of second-degree trespassing. He was taken to the Forsyth County magistrate’s office where he was held in lieu of a $500,000 secured bond.

After further investigation, University Police charged Carver with the Sept. 18 robbery.

Carver was also charged Sept. 24 with one misdemeanor count of possession of stolen property. On the night of his initial arrest, he was carrying a backpack containing a padlock that is alleged to be university property.

The Sept. 24 charges increased Carver’s bond to $550,500. He remains at the Forsyth County Jail.
