Steam pipes leak, flood WFU residence halls
Gaskets on steam pipes in the attics of Johnson and Bostwick residence halls at Wake Forest University weakened shortly before 5 a.m. on Sept. 30, causing the pipes to leak water into and flood portions of both residence halls.
The steam released from the pipes triggered the fire alarms in both residence halls, forcing students to leave the buildings. No students were injured.
Wake Forest’s Facilities Management, University Police and Residence Life and Housing departments responded immediately and have completed cleaning up both residence halls. The residence halls are operational and students have been allowed back into their rooms.
The pipes leaked as a result of the heat turning on in the residence halls. The leaking pipes caused water to seep into students’ rooms and hallways. The women’s side of the 3rd floor of Johnson flooded, which caused water to seep down to the 2nd and 1st floors. The flooding in Bostwick was contained to the 3rd floor.
Some of the water was discolored. Facilities Management said the discolored water poses no threat and should easily wash out of any fabrics that absorbed it.
